About FreelanceCalc

FreelanceCalc is a free collection of tax and finance calculators built specifically for freelancers, 1099 contractors, gig workers, and other self-employed professionals in the United States.

The idea came from a simple, common frustration: most online tax calculators are built for W2 employees, and the few that target freelancers often oversimplify the math in ways that lead to underpaying or overpaying. Self-employment tax, quarterly estimated payments, and the deductions available to independent contractors all work differently than a typical paycheck calculator assumes.

What's on this site

There are eight calculators covering the most common financial questions freelancers run into: estimating quarterly taxes, comparing 1099 income to a W2 salary, figuring out what hourly rate to charge, building quick invoices, calculating late payment fees, checking whether a project is actually profitable, and tracking two of the most commonly missed deductions — mileage and home office expenses.

How it works

Every calculation happens directly in your browser using standard JavaScript. Nothing you type is sent to a server, logged, or stored anywhere — you can close the tab and your information is gone. There's no account to create and no email required to use any tool on this site.

A note on accuracy

These tools are built using publicly available IRS guidance and standard tax formulas, and are intended for estimation and planning purposes. They are not a substitute for advice from a licensed CPA or tax professional, particularly for situations involving state taxes, multiple income streams, or more complex business structures. See the disclaimer for more detail.
